What is Pranayama?
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning "extension of the prana or breath" or more accurately, "extension of the life force".Pranayama is "Control of Breath". One can control the rhythms of pranic energy with pranayama and achieve healthy body and mind.Five types of prana are responsible for various pranic activities in the body, they are Prana, Apana, Vyan, Udana & Samana.

Pranayama-Breathing Control In Yoga


Pranayama the science of breath control. "Prana" means life or vital life in the body and "Ayama" means control. So Pranayama is "Control of Breath". Breath is the life force that sustains life, thus Pranayama is the control of life force. To achieve a healthy body and mind, you can control the rhythms of pranic energy with pranayama. Breathing is the only means to supply oxygen to our blood stream and to Brain, Pranayama teaches healthy breathing techniques to maintain a healthy body and a peaceful mind.

Five forms of prana are responsible for various pranic activities in the body, they are Prana, Apana, Vyan, Udana & Samana. Out of these Prana and Apana are most important. Prana is upward flowing and Apana is downward flowing. Practice of Pranayama achieves the balance in the activities of these pranas, which results in healthy body and mind.

The most authoritative book on yoga by Pathanjali, The Yogasutra, details the eight limbs(Astang) as Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.
